Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a disease that can be present both in the life of the man and in the life of the woman. The main objective of this study was to verify, through a literature review, the general aspects related to urinary tract infection, with a special focus on women. Data sources such as: Virtual Health Library (VHL), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and National Library of Medicine (NLM) with the following descriptors: urinary tract infection; urinary tract infection in women; symptoms of urinary tract infection and treatment of urinary tract infection. The inclusion criteria established were: original articles made available in full and in the online form, published in Portuguese and English, between 1993 and 2019. Studies have shown that the number of women suffering from treatment is great, and this happens from youth, and may be present from the first year of life of the individual. There are factors that make women an easier target for infection, such as: active sex life, lack of hygiene, and the fact that the urethra is close to the anus. However, there are simple means of prevention that can easily be inserted into women's daily lives. Regarding the treatment, because it is an infection, the most recommended is to have a consultation with the professional so that, with responsibility and knowledge, the situation is resolved and stabilized.pt_BR
