N: The immune system defends the body against foreign and invading organisms, promoting protective immunity while maintaining self-tolerance. The implications of vitamin D deficiency on the immune system have become clearer in recent years and, in the context of vitamin D deficiency, there appears to be an increased susceptibility to infection and diathesis in a host genetically susceptible to autoimmunity. The classic actions of vitamin D are to promote calcium homeostasis and promote bone health. OBJECTIVE: to investigate and describe, in accordance with scientific literature, the influence and benefits of Vitamin D on the immune system. METHODOLOGY: This is an exploratory bibliographic review study carried out through a literature review. Data collection was carried out in the databases: Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (PUBMED), from 2013 to 2023. RESULTS: Vitamin D, through food fortification and supplementation, is a promising new health strategy and therefore offers opportunities for the food industry and nutrition researchers to work together to determine how to achieve this potential health benefit. CONCLUSION: In view of the study presented and in accordance with the scientific literature, Vitamin D has great influence and benefits on the immune system, as it plays a fundamental role in calcium homeostasis and, therefore, provides important support in bone growth, helping in the mineralization of the collagen matrix, it is beneficial to bone health, promotes the mineralization of the collagen matrix in bones, has an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory role, among other benefits.pt_BR

UÇÃO: O sistema imunológico defende o corpo contra organismos estranhos e invasores, promovendo imunidade protetora enquanto mantém a tolerância a si mesmo.
